Portrait Sculpture

Jane has a passion for capturing the character of the person being represented, or the better word would be "presented". As is obvious from the selected examples on this website, the portrait sculptures are much more than just a representative bust. They often include more of the body, which enables body language to be added to the descriptive mix as well as stylistic details to do with things like dress and jewellery.

The structures which carry the figure are manipulated to suggest character as well. Consider the sculpture "Anne"; where bricks are cast and embedded under the figure which is supported on a structure that alludes to a building. The planar treatment of the structure adds to the 3D interest around the sculpture as well as reinforcing the notions of stability, strength and trustworthiness.

The treatment of the hair contrasts with that of the skin. Careful modelling has ensured an accurate and strongly realistic modelling of the face and shoulders. The hair has been treated with impressionistic vigour yet is sufficiently descriptive to indicate its actual appearance.

The sculpture of A.D. Hope, while being a very closely accurate rendition of physical form, is highly textured to capture age and character. It is an artists reaction to another's presence, resulting in a much more informative and visually interesting result than a straight forward facial study would reveal.

The series of sculptures titled "Ruth" are wryly humorous and revealing in their serial nature with slight changes of facial expression on each while the building structures also change in architectural style.

The scale of sculptures that are to be placed in an outdoor setting are usually larger than life size, otherwise the environment tends to dwarf the impression of the sculpture.

Portrait work is best done from life, however photographs or videos, can also be used. Jane is able to travel to national and international locations in order to work directly from the sitter.
